Here’s a list of the 980 religious organizations in Texas that solicited Uncle Sam to pay their salaries.

Of the 4.9 million loans approved through the U.S. Small Business Administration’s Paycheck Protection Program, 10,682 were religious organizations. They received between $3 billion and $7.5 billion largely through taxpayer money and national debt, according to calculations by OpenTheBooks.com, a nonprofit organization that receives no federal money.

Among the 10,682 religious organizations, roughly 980 are in Texas. The first batch of recipients was released by the SBA. There will be more.

Among the 980 Texas entities, 15 received the most money, between $2 and $5 million.

The remainder includes 48 religious institutions, which received between $1 and $2 million; 268 religious organizations received between $350,000 and $1 million and the majority —647— received between $150,000 and $350,000.

These 980 religious institutions are not representative of Texas’ more than 6.5 million self-identifying evangelicals.

As critics have pointed out, the federal government funding the salaries of pastors, imams, priests, and other religious leaders’ efforts and “ministries” is a violation of the First Amendment. More importantly, for Bible-believing Christians, taking federal money to “remain solvent” is the opposite of what the Bible the teaches.

There is a cosmic difference between having one’s faith based in the God of the Bible versus having faith based in the God of the government, or Uncle Sam.

The list published below is the first by state and/or region I will be publishing of religious organizations that solicited Uncle Sam in March to fund their payrolls for the first time in U.S. history. Taxpayers would not have known which religious organizations received taxpayer money had the SBA not released this information.

It’s important to note that most of these organizations are still soliciting donations/tithes while they are receiving federal money. The overwhelming majority never told their congregants/donors that they had applied for federal money, or how much they received after most of the federal loans were approved in April.

The list was compiled with the help of OpenTheBooks.com. Its auditors mapped the largest loans – nearly 83,000 – in amounts of $1 million to $10 million – located in 13,700 zip codes across the country. Using this free tool, taxpayers can find out which organizations (secular and religious) received federal money through an agency created to help small businesses.

As I have already reported, some are asking how these groups are different from the white washed tombs Jesus describes in Matthew 23:25-28 or how their leaders differ from those described in Matthew 7:21–23? (Jesus includes religious leaders who claim they “did many mighty works in [his] name” in his “seven woes.” In response to them, he says, “I never knew you; depart from me, you workers of lawlessness.”)

“‘I never knew you’ means ‘I don’t recognize you as my disciple,’” John Piper explains. “‘I don’t acknowledge you as my follower. You are a spiritual stranger to me.’ Judas would be the best example here from Jesus’s life. For three years, he cast out demons and did many mighty works with Jesus. In the end, he was driven by money, not by love for Jesus. We know that from John 12:6. He’s called a thief. He was excluded at the end of all that time with Jesus.”

An opportunity now exists for evangelicals on the SBA list to demonstrate what repentance, transparency and accountability looks like, according to what the Bible teaches.

Perhaps some decisions to accept money were made out of fear, greed, a misunderstanding of what the Bible teaches or of the government’s role. Perhaps leaders believed they were making the right decision at the time without understanding the serious consequences they now face. Whatever, the motivation, there is still the opportunity for a course correction.

Otherwise, unlike Abram in Gen. 14, these organizations are claiming that their wealth comes from the government, not from the blessings of the God they claim to worship.

A tragic turning point for American evangelicals: soliciting Uncle Sam to pay their salaries

Disclaimer: This article primarily focuses on evangelical churches, schools and organizations, pastors and leaders receiving federal money to fund their payrolls.

Federal assistance given to small business organizations like religious assisted living centers or healthcare companies is not the same as funding the salaries of missionaries, seminary or church staff, and especially not of pastors preaching from the pulpit or religious leaders overseeing worship and music ministries, Sunday school and bible study curriculum, missions trips, Bible camps, church planting entities, and other faith-based organizations.

It’s important to note that these institutions are still soliciting donations/tithes while they are receiving federal money. The overwhelming majority never told their congregants/donors that they had applied for federal money, or how much they received after most of the federal loans were approved in April.

Current Crisis

For the first time in U.S. history, state governors and judges issued orders to shut down their state and local economies, only allowing some entities designated as “essential businesses” to remain open. Houses of worship and religious organizations in many states were classified as “nonessential.” Some modifications were made to these terms yet severe restrictions imposed solely on houses of worship have continued even as states reopened.

Roughly a few hundred local officials and 41 governors single handedly put more than 40 million people out of work, claiming their respective state shutdowns were necessary to prevent the spread of the coronavirus. According to the Government Accountability Office (GAO), 42 million unemployment claims have been filed nationwide since March.

Congress stepped in to provide financial assistance to individuals, families and businesses impacted by state shutdowns by passing key legislation: the CARES Act, the Families First Relief Act, and the Small Business Relief Act (SBRA). The majority in Congress did not have time to read the CARES Act, but passed it anyway.

The final version of the bill signed by the president was released 20 minutes before the Senate voted on it, Rachel Bovard at the Conservative Partnership notes. U.S. Senators were neither informed about any changes made to the bill, nor did they have time to read its 880 pages before they voted for it.

In the U.S. House, one lone voice of conscience stood. Rep. Thomas Massie, R-Ky., requested a recorded vote, which both Republicans and Democrats denied. Meaning, no vote was recorded for the single largest relief bill passed in the House in U.S. history.

Simply by a voice vote members of Congress passed bills that are expected to increase the national debt by $1.76 trillion, and $192 billion, respectively, according to Congressional Budget Office (CBO) projections. The SBRA adds $480 billion to the total.

All told, these bills, combined with increased debt and lost revenue, will add an estimated $5.8 trillion to the national debt, Chris Edwards, economist at the Cato Institute, estimates. In June, the federal budget deficit was $864 billion, an amount greater than the entire federal budget deficit for the year of 2018, according to the CBO.

Congress is expected to pass another $1 trillion stimulus package, which will add even more debt to this total. Additionally, state and local governments are considering a range of tax increases to offset their revenue losses, further burdening taxpayers. Meanwhile, many businesses initially forced to close in March may never reopen.

A recent GAO report reveals that since April, the U.S. Treasury Department sent nearly $1.4 billion worth of CARES Act stimulus payments to DEAD people. The U.S. Department of Labor also estimates that roughly $26 billion worth of improper unemployment insurance payments will be made through the CARES Act/SBRA this year alone.

Pastoral Relevance

At the federal level, few pastors have condemned Congress’ fiscally irresponsible practice of subjecting its citizens to unsustainable debt, eradicating the middle class, making the rich richer and the poor poorer.

At the state level, several pastors have filed lawsuits in California, Florida, Kansas, Kentucky, Illinois, Maine, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, Nevada, North Carolina, Oregon, Texas, and Virginia. Jewish rabbis and Roman Catholic priests sued in New Jersey and New York, alleging discriminatory harassment and treatment.

Despite the U.S. Justice Department weighing in on a case-by-case basis, five liberal Supreme Court Justices ruled against the Constitution they swore to uphold in two separate cases brought by churches in California and Nevada.

In the most recent ruling, which denied Calvary Chapel Dayton Valley’s request, Justice Samuel Alito wrote:

“We have a duty to defend the Constitution, and even a public health emergency does not absolve us of that responsibility. The Constitution guarantees the free exercise of religion. It says nothing about freedom to play craps or blackjack, to feed tokens into a slot machine or to engage in any other game of chance.”

Even though Justice Neil Gorsuch argued, “there is no world in which the Constitution permits Nevada to favor Caesars Palace over Calvary Chapel,” under a Democratic governor and five liberal Supreme Court Justices, there apparently is.

When it comes to practicing discernment in response to coronavirus hysteria, Georgia’s Northlake Baptist Church pastor Danny Jones was brave enough to speak out about the evil forces behind the release of the virus and subsequent state government shutdowns.

Historically, evangelical pastors have been beacons of hope during times of national crisis. They have led national revivals and great awakenings, provided moral guidance, fought in battles, and led the abolitionist movement. They have also have founded orphanages, hospitals, seminaries and colleges.

One of the most influential was Baptist minister Roger Williams, a nonconforming separatist who founded the state of Rhode Island. He wrote perhaps the most influential treatise on government and religious liberty, which has been a cornerstone of western political philosophy for over 400 years.

Were it not for Williams, we might not have the First Amendment in its current form:

“Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.”

Prior to the Revolutionary War, colonists under British rule were required to be members of the Church of England, which was the sole established church of the colonies. Colonists were taxed to fund the salaries of only Church of England clergy, not pastors of any other denomination. This practice ended after the British were defeated.

Despite America’s costly victory, eight years after independence in 1784, Patrick Henry proposed a bill to create a general 3 pence tax to establish a provision for “Teachers [Ministers] of the Christian Religion.”

James Madison opposed it, arguing doing so,

“will destroy that moderation and harmony which the forbearance of our laws to intermeddle with Religion has produced among its several sects. Torrents of blood have been split in the old world, by vain attempts of the secular arm, to extinguish Religious discord, by proscribing all difference in Religious opinion. Time has at length revealed the true remedy.”

Two years later, in 1786, the Virginia Assembly enacted the Virginia Statute of Religious Freedom. It disestablished the Church of England from the state and guaranteed religious freedom. Thomas Jefferson wrote, “To compel a man to furnish contributions of money for the propagation of opinions which he disbelieves and abhors, is sinful and tyrannical.”

Debt and Dependence

Rather than remember their historic roots—2020 evangelical leaders held out their hands for “their share” of the federal debt money. They were all too willing to plunge themselves, their congregants, their neighbors and fellow citizens, into unsustainable debt, which if left uncorrected, will collapse the economy.

Evangelical leaders aggressively encouraged churches to enroll in a federal program initially created to solely help small businesses—to pay for pastors’ and church employees’ salaries—exactly what our founding fathers opposed. Christianity Today even published instructions on how to apply for federal funding, as well as links to other guidelines published by self-identifying evangelical organizations.

Through the SBRA, the Small Business Administration (SBA) processed roughly $512 billion guaranteed loans as of June 12, distributed through the Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) in amounts of $150,000 to $10 million.

Initially, many SBA loans were given to multi-million dollar companies that are not small businesses. Some recipients gave back the money to the U.S. Treasury Department after public outcry. But many didn’t.

The SBA recently released the names of 4.9 million PPP recipients that received at least $3 billion as much as $7.5 billion. This is the first batch of recipients to be released. There will be more.

Among them are 10,682 religious organizations. They primarily include Roman Catholic dioceses and churches, Baptist conventions and churches, numerous nondenominational evangelical churches, and some Jewish and Islamic entities.

Disclosures include business name and type, nonprofit information, addresses, ZIP codes, demographic data, name of lender, and number of jobs supported. Only a range of the loan amount received was released, not the actual amount: from $150,000 to $350,000; $350,000 to $1 million; $1 million to $2 million; $2 million to $5 million; and $5 million to $10 million.

Auditors at OpenTheBooks.com, a nonprofit organization that takes no federal money, mapped the largest loans. They include nearly 83,000 loans in amounts of $1 million to $10 million located in 13,700 zip codes across the country. Using Open The Books’ free, online tool, taxpayers can find out who received federal money, and how much.

Largely through unsustainable debt, the federal government is funding the salaries (for roughly six months) of individuals whose job descriptions include preaching the gospel and creating Christian discipleship. Other job descriptions include Islamic dawah and other forms of religious proselytization.

Millions of unemployed Americans— receiving no full salaries and benefits— are burdened with paying these salaries.

“As you search the federal PPP loan portfolio, keep in mind that taxpayers will pay for most of these ‘loans’,” Adam Andrzejewski, CEO of OpenTheBooks.com, explains.

“The loans are forgivable – treated as a grant – as long as the businesses retain their employees and don’t cut their paychecks,” he adds.

Historically, churches, synagogues and mosques have relied on tithes from their congregants. Now they have successfully solicited Uncle Sam, who apparently pays quite well. (And why wouldn’t he—after all he is spending someone else’s (the taxpayers’) money.)

“Faith-based organizations are eligible to receive SBA loans regardless of whether they provide secular social services,” the SBA said in a statement. “No otherwise eligible organization will be disqualified from receiving a loan because of the religious nature, religious identity, or religious speech of the organization.”

Focus on the Family founder James Dobson, a member of Trump’s Evangelical Advisory Council, said on a White House call that the James Dobson Family Institute, which received between $350,000 and $1 million, “has literally been kept solvent . . . by the Paycheck Protection Plan,” according to a transcript of a phone call published by the Freedom from Religion Foundation (FFRF).

Dobson said on the call that in 43 years of leading faith-based ministries, he has “never asked for, nor received, one cent from the federal government.” Although he appears to have been more than willing to apply for, and receive, federal money once he was offered it.

Can you imagine Jesus or the Apostle Paul thanking their respective Roman governors for keeping their “ministry” financially solvent?

“We believe the SBA funds to churches are unconstitutional, and the behind-the-scenes favoritism and meetings with certain religious leaders is unethical,” Annie Laurie Gaylor, co-president of the FFRF, said in a statement.

The FFRF also points to founding father Benjamin Franklin’s Oct. 9, 1780 letter to Dr. Richard Price about solvency. In it, Franklin wrote,

“When a religion is good, I conceive it will support itself; and when it does not support itself, and God does not take care to support it, so that its professors are oblig’d to call for help of the civil power, ‘tis a sign, I apprehend, of its being a bad one.”

According to the transcripts of the released calls, not a single person acknowledged that taking federal money to fund the preaching and teaching of the gospel is the opposite of what the Bible teaches. Both Old and the New Testament texts are clear: believers never took money from pagans, nor did they rely on the world.

Some evangelical organizations and pastors said they wouldn’t even consider taking federal money.

Faithwire’s Chuck Bentley said his organization qualified for the SBA program, but didn’t apply. “We didn’t want to borrow money; we didn’t want to have a grant that came from taxpayers,” he said. “So we just declined to do it.”

Terry Amann, pastor of Church of the Way, a nondenominational evangelical church in Des Moines, Iowa, argues that churches taking federal money represent “a tragic development” and “terrible witness saying, ‘we trust in government more than we trust in God.’”

“Churches need to be a check and balance for the government by way of prophetic voice,” Amann adds. “Taking money from the government then becomes a conflict of interest.”

Amann urges churches to give back the money to the government and “trust God, not the government for your provision.”

NCLL attorney David Gibbs says his organization, which advocates for religious liberty, does “not believe that there will be any major concerns because this is an extraordinary time where the government is trying to get funds to citizens through employers.”

Gibbs adds that there were no strings attached to the loans and that receiving them does not mean the government “provide[s] any control over the church’s beliefs or functions. If the government attempted to assert any control after giving the loan, the litigation and the outcry would be significant. This position has been publicly confirmed by the SBA.”

“Most churches are viewing this as an opportunity to assist their employees and the economy in this unprecedented time in our nation’s history,” he said.

But in a recent letter to pastors, former Pennsylvania state legislator and president of the American Pastor’s Network, Sam Rohrer, explains: “there is no such thing as free money.”

“When government gets involved there are always strings attached,” he says. “What government allocates, government regulates.”

Rohrer explains that Section 1102 of the federal regulation was announced 30 days after implementing the SBA loan program, which provides guidance to lenders on the deferment process. It also includes a provision for the U.S. Senate to conduct hearings on the way some of this money has been distributed.

On April 23, the SBA came out with guidelines, and law firms across the country weighed in, Rohrer says. Civil penalties may include treble damages, statutory penalties, fines for false claims, and jail time.

The language states that religious institutions and recipient businesses had to legally certify that these federal funds “were necessary for your continuance.”

Guidance from SBA and law firms raising questions asked these groups: would your church go out of business if you didn’t get this money?

“If you can’t say that,” Rohrer explains, “then you are open for a possible charge of civil fraud in all of these criminal activities. These are strings that come with this ‘free’ money.”

It is hard to imagine that mega-churches undergoing multi-million dollar building project fundraisers, million dollar missions fundraisers and other activities, would “go out of business” without first asking their congregants to give money, or without cutting staff salaries, halting building projects, or taking other spending cut measures. Laid off employees would collect unemployment, including the additional $600 weekly federal unemployment payment authorized by Congress.

Instead, congregants nationwide have told me that their church leaders never even informed them that they were applying for PPP loans. Their churches never sent out any form of communication to their congregants asking them for money to fill budget holes—or even to tell them that there were budget holes. Even after churches received the federal money, their leaders still didn’t tell their congregants how much they received.

From New Jersey to Texas to California, congregants have expressed the same sentiment: absolute shock when they hear their leaders applied for the PPP and how much they received. The repetitive questions they ask are:

“Why should I give any money to this church when it took between $1 and $2 million from the federal government to fund salaries for a few months? Did our leaders not tell us because they were afraid if we found out we would stop giving? Did they not think to ask us that maybe we would have given more in response to a need? Why did leadership keep asking us to donate money while all the while they were getting fully funded by the federal government?”

Isn’t disclosing the amount evangelicals received a fiduciary responsibility, let alone part of financial stewardship and accountability?

Regulatory and Legal Quagmire

Again, to receive funding, “certification is a really high standard,” Rohrer says.

Warnings about taking the money even came from religious groups’ banks, Rohrer says, including his own—highlighting important questions for applicants to consider.

Businesses are by law a creation of the state. Churches are not. But by taking the money, churches effectively said, “We are asking for your money but don’t want to be regulated by you. Not a realistic expectation,” Rohrer adds.

In fact, churches are already complying by requiring attendees to RSVP to hear the gospel, limiting how many people can attend, not meeting in person at all, and imposing other restrictions.

Evangelical leaders complying with orders to avoid monetary or jail penalties appear to have forgotten how their European counterparts complied with the policies of Mussolini and Hitler in the 1930’s and 1940’s. It all began with similar ordinances like today’s, which little by little, prohibited movement, speech and other acts of worship—and resulted in imprisonment (and death) for noncompliance.

Evangelical leaders who argue they are protected from government overreach by the First Amendment on the one hand, cannot then ignore the First Amendment by taking money from the federal government on the other hand. There are serious legal and regulatory consequences.

Churches taking federal money open themselves up to being audited, at best, and receiving criminal penalties, at worst; “that is a fact under the law,” Rohrer says.

Because of an SBA rule—created by unelected bureaucrats—separation of church and state is gone.

According to the Constitution, Alison Gill, legal and policy vice president of American Atheists, told NPR,

“The government cannot directly fund inherently religious activities. [No federal or state government] can spend tax dollars on prayer, on promoting religion [or] proselytization. That directly contradicts the Establishment Clause of the First Amendment. This is the most drastic attack on church-state separation we have ever seen.”

But isn’t this exactly what the government is doing?

Now evangelical leaders maintain it is the federal government’s role—through taxpayer debt and taxes—to pay the salaries of pastors, church leaders, rabbis, priests, nuns, Islamic leaders, and all of their employees.

How does a pastor then accept this money and turn around and approach someone like Alison and expect her to listen to anything he has to say?

Since these evangelicals are happily accepting taxpayer-funded salaries and benefits, would they now be willing to forgo their tax-exempt status, which has enabled them to receive tax-free tithes, offering and donations?

Andrzejewski adds another line of questioning, “When you follow the money, it’s potentially troublesome when America’s faith-based institutions rely on government subsidies. Will the billions of dollars in government aid influence the message at the pulpit?”

Biblical Imperative

To be clear: evangelicals using federal money to pay their salaries appear to have thrown the teachings of the New Testament out window. They have brought into question their credibility—namely their unique claim to believe in the authority of the Word of God. Worse still, they are misleading others about what the term, “evangelical” actually means through their radical departure from biblical principles and teachings that have been the bedrock of evangelicalism for centuries.

As China Inland Mission founder and missionary Hudson Taylor famously said:

“Depend on it. God’s work done in God’s way will never lack God’s supply. He is too wise a God to frustrate His purposes for lack of funds, and He can just as easily supply them ahead of time as afterwards, and He much prefers doing so.”

Evangelicals can take comfort in obeying Jesus’s words found in the Sermon on the Mount. He said,

“Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more important than food, and the body more important h clothes? Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to his life? …

“So do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ For the pagans run after all these things and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness and all these things will be given to you as well.” (Matthew 6:25-27; 31-33)

Jesus doesn’t say Uncle Sam “knows you that needs these things.” He says, “your heavenly Father” does.

No wonder these pastors aren’t standing up against government overreach or America’s political and spiritual atrophy—they’re on the government payroll.

The majority of the evangelical churches receiving federal money clearly state on their websites their purpose is to share the gospel and create disciples.

The gospel is the “good news” of Jesus Christ—that Jesus alone offers salvation. Through grace we are saved from our sins, from the punishment of eternal hell fire and from eternal separation from a God who created and loves us. Anyone who believes in Jesus will be saved and live with him for eternity. This is not a trite concept. This is the whole purpose of a Christian’s existence: to know God through Jesus, and to worship God forever. Sharing this good news is a matter of life and death—and it is free to all who believe.

For nonbelievers wondering what discipleship means, Jesus also explains it in the Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 5-7) (among other texts). He gave instructions to his followers in Mark 6:8-11 on how to preach the gospel, including not to rely on the world, but solely to rely on God.

The apostles specifically took no money from nonbelievers. They worked for their keep, and they intentionally did not place any financial burdens on believers or nonbelievers. How do we know this? They tell us throughout the New Testament.

In 3 John 7, we learn: “It was for the sake of the Name that they went out, receiving no help from the pagans.” Commentaries point out that they received no help from the pagans not because they weren’t offered help—but because the disciples did not ask, did not want, and did not receive their help.

Other texts communicate similar instructions: 1 Thessalonians 4:11-12; 2 Thessalonians 3:6-15; 1 Timothy 5:7,8,21.

Again, this bears repeating—when the disciples and apostles preached the gospel they did so “for the sake of the Name” of Jesus—specifically not asking for help from pagans, “to not be dependent on anybody” and “to follow our example.” This principle is not just relevant to that particular time in history. It is still relevant today.

But apparently in 2020 America, believing in the name of Jesus isn’t enough to weather an economic storm, cut salaries, or even lay off employees and trust in God for their provision. But believing in Uncle Sam’s is.

Evangelical leaders taking federal money apparently no longer believe in what faith-based means: faith based in the God of the Bible not in the god of government.

Faith-based doesn’t mean putting their own congregants and neighbors into further debt.

Faith-based doesn’t mean that evangelicals in America should choose to fill their bellies, drive their cars and pay their mortgages—all on the taxpayers’ dime— while Christians worldwide are suffering intense persecution, being burned alive and buried alive.

Seeking Righteousness

There have been many unprecedented times in U.S. history—for every generation. How evangelicals respond during these times—and on whom they rely—is the entire point of faith. If evangelicals today won’t trust in the most powerful name and person of Jesus—in whom they claim to believe and are allegedly creating disciples of—when will they? And what kind of message does this send to their congregants and to nonbelievers?

Abraham, the father of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam, provides an example of a righteous man who refused to take money from a pagan government when it was offered to him.

According to Genesis 14, after the King of Salem blessed Abram for defeating his enemies, Abram gave the king a tenth of everything. Then the king of Sodom said to Abram, “Give me the people and keep the goods for yourself.”

But Abram replied,

“I have raised my hand to the LORD, God Most High, Creator of heaven and earth, and have taken an oath that I will accept nothing belonging to you, not even a thread or the throng of a sandal, so that you will never be able to say, ‘I made Abram rich.’ I will accept nothing but what my men have eaten and the share that belongs to the men who went with me…” (Genesis 14: 21-24)

God reaffirmed his covenant to Abram after he rejected the king’s offer. Then he said, “Do not be afraid, Abram. I am your shield, your very great reward.” God then told Abram that his offspring would be like the number of stars in the universe. “Abram believed the LORD and he credited it to him as righteousness.” (Gen. 15)

Perhaps if evangelicals stood for righteousness our country would not be experiencing the turmoil it is today.

Again, we can look to the Bible to understand why: “Righteousness exalts a nation, but sin condemns any people.” (Proverbs 14:34)

What remains to be seen is whether or not evangelical leaders will return the money and return to the principles of scripture they say they are committed to preaching. If not, their congregants should consider finding another church to attend. They can also ask for the tithes they gave while their church leaders were on the federal payroll—to be returned to them.

Alternatively, believers can support faith-based-in-God churches and organizations that have not, and will never, accept federal money.

‘Sing Hallelujah to the Lord’ Becomes Anthem for Hong Kong Protests [videos]

“Sing Hallelujah to the Lord” has emerged as a rallying cry among protesters, Reuters reports as a way to protect them from authorities. “Religious gatherings can be held without a permit in the financial hub,” it states.

Mass protests in Hong Kong over the proposed “Fugitive Offenders and Mutual Legal Assistance in Criminal Matters” bill have been going on for months. The bill would allow for the extradition of “criminals” identified by Mainland China for trial from Hong Kong.

Hong Kong a “Special Administrative Region” of China, has its own government and monetary system. Mainland China is ruled under the People’s Republic of China since Hong Kong’s sovereignty was transferred from the United Kingdom to China in 1997.

On June 16, an estimated two million people filled the streets urging the government to formally withdraw the legislation. According to a Reuters report, China has forbidden Hong Kong from withdrawing the bill.

Peaceful gatherings have continued, calling for democracy throughout the region–extending to communist Mainland China.

On Aug. 23, Christians took to the streets to protest against the Hong Kong government and Communism. They wore shirts stating, “God bless Hong Kong,” singing, “Sing Hallelujah to the Lord,” while holding hands.

Their hand-holding chain was said to stretch for miles.

Ilhan Omar, Islamic law and the U.S. Constitution

Central to the controversy surrounding the anti-Semitic and disparaging remarks about Jews and Israel made by the newly elected (some argue, fraudulently) Somali-born Congresswoman from Minnesota, Ilhan Omar, is the distinction between two laws: Islamic law and the U.S. Constitution.

It is unlikely that Omar would present a history of making such claims if she were not an adherent of Islamic ideology rooted in the Qur’an. The Qur’an is the basis for Islamic law, just as the U.S. Constitution is the basis for U.S. law.

Discussions about Omar’s apology are ongoing; numerous elected officials have requested House Speaker Nancy Pelosi to remove her from the House Foreign Affairs Committee.

A petition on Change.org has more than 178,891 signatures calling for Omar’s removal as of Feb. 19; the number has grown by more than 10,000 signatures daily. Another petition demands Omar be censured for her “repeated history of false, derogatory and hateful communications that go well beyond the bounds of acceptable discourse….”

Still others are calling for her removal from office altogether. Brigitte Gabriel, founder of Act for America, a grassroots organization exposing Sharia law in America, said:

“Ilhan Omar is a danger to our nation’s national security. She married her brother to commit immigration fraud. She has allegiance/ties to terrorist groups that have declared war on the United States. She has clearly proven to be a raging anti-Semite.”

In the U.S., it is legal to hate Jews and be anti-Semitic. One’s belief is not a crime. But hate speech and hate crimes are.

The critical distinction is that the Qur’an, and therefore Islamic law, instructs its followers in more than 100 verses to wage war and commit violence against non-Muslims. The U.S. Constitution does not.

The underlying impetus for Omar’s claims appears to be rooted in Shari’a law—which means submission to the law of the Qur’an. Because Omar self-identifies as a Muslim, and by the very definition of Islam, it appears that her allegiance to the Qur’an outweighs any allegiance she may have claimed to make to the U.S. Constitution.

Australian Imam Mohamad Tawhidi hinted at this in his response to Omar’s disparaging statements about President Trump. Tawhidi said:

“Amazing what time can do. Little girl from the deserts of Somalia speaking like that to the President of the United States. If you had tweeted that to President Farmajo of Somalia, he would have applied Sharia Law onto you; the law you cherish so much. Behave yourself, guest.”

In my forthcoming book, “What Christians in America Should Know About Islam,” one third of the book defines Islamic jurisprudence, which includes Jew-hatred.

The Qur’an refers to Jews as “apes, despised and hated.” (Surah 2:65; 7:166) Jews are “worse than [transgressors] in retribution… and whom Allah has cursed and brought His wrath upon, and of whom He made apes and swine, … and serve Shaitan (Satan).” (Surah 5:60)

Jews are the “vilest of animals” who “break their agreement every time.” (Surah 8:55-56) Jews, like Christians and polytheists, “are the worst of men.” (Surah 98:6)

The Qur’an instructs its followers: “O you who believe! do not take not the Jews and the Christians for friends,” whom the Qur’an describes are “unjust people.” (Surah 5:51; see also 57ff)

These examples exclude the more than 100 commands to commit violence against and murder non-Muslims.

The Middle East Media Research Institute (MEMRI) has translated into English and published hundreds of expositions Islamic leaders have given about Jews.

For example, Egyptian cleric, Hussam Fawzi Jabar, explained:

“This is the nature of the Jews. By nature, they abhor keeping their commitments. By nature, they hate peace. By nature, they love treachery, betrayal, deception, killing, and blood. This is their nature.

“One of the most amazing things I have read is that Hitler said: ‘I could have annihilated all the Jews of the world, but I left some of them, so that you would understand why I did this to them.’ Hitler was right to say what he said and to do what he did to the Jews.”

Sheikh Bassam Al-Kayed, the Head of the Association of Palestinian Islamic Scholars said on Hamas’ official television station, an organization Omar supports:

“The Jew is a Satan in human form. Allah inflicted the Jews upon humanity in its entirety, and especially upon the nation of Islam, including the early prophets and the Prophet Muhammad.”

In Houston a few months ago, Raed Saleh Al-Rousan, of the Tajweed Institute, a Florida-based Islamic organization, said Muslims will kill Jews on Judgment Day. MEMRI translated and published his remarks, which garnered international attention. In response, Gilad Katz, the Israeli Consul General for six states including Texas, said, “We should not be tolerant towards hatred. Hatred should be met with a very strong fist of the law, and should be dealt with seriously.”

But Al-Rousan was likely referencing well-known texts in the hadith, which are volumes of transcribed instructions and testimony from Muhammad’s followers. Combined as the Sunnah, the hadith are considered second to the Qur’an when discerning Islamic law.

The texts he most likely referenced include: “The hour will not come until Muslims fight and kill the Jews and the Jews will hide behind trees and rocks, and these trees and rocks will cry out saying, ‘O Muslim, slave of Allah, this Jew is hiding behind me, come and kill him.’” (Sahih al-Bukhari Vol. 4, Book 52, No. 176, 177; See also: Vol. 4 Book 56, No. 791; Sahih Muslim Book 041, No. 6981, 6983-6985)

Unlike the Qur’an and the hadith, the U.S. Constitution was created to protect the inalienable rights of U.S. citizens, including freedom of speech specified in the First Amendment. The First Amendment does not protect hate speech, and hate crimes are felonies investigated and reported on by the FBI.

The FBI defines a hate crime as a “criminal offense against a person or property motivated in whole or in part by an offender’s bias against a race, religion, disability, sexual orientation, ethnicity, gender, or gender identity.” The FBI notes that hate itself is not a crime. Hate crimes, depending on the severity, carry sentences of ten years to life in prison, and death, depending on the state where the crime was committed.

The FBI’s Uniform Crime Reporting Program (UCRP) began collecting hate crime data in 2011, and added race and ethnicity data in 2013. Since 2013, it reports that more than fifty percent of the victims of anti-religious hate crimes in the U.S. are Jews.

In 2014, the first year the UCRP published data, there were 1,140 victims of anti-religious hate crimes reported in the U.S. Of them, “56.8 percent were victims of crimes motivated by their offenders’ anti-Jewish bias.”

In 2015 this number increased to 1,402 victims of anti-religious hate crimes, of which “52.1 percent were victims of crimes motivated by their offenders’ anti-Jewish bias.”

In 2016 (the latest data available), the number increased to 1,584 victims of anti-religious hate crimes, of which “54.4 percent were victims of crimes motivated by their offenders’ anti-Jewish bias.”

Whether or not any remarks Omar has made (or will make) are deemed as hate speech remains to be seen.

What should be acknowledged is that the Qur’an appears to legalize hatred of specific people groups. It is also a crime to contradict Qur’anic law under apostasy and blasphemy laws. The Pew Research Center reports that 90 percent of Middle East and North African Islamic countries criminalize blasphemy; 70 percent criminalize apostasy. Somalia criminalizes both.

Fortunately, Islamic law according to the Qur’an has no legal standing in the U.S. As long as the U.S. Constitution remains the harbinger of freedom, Jews who remain the most targeted victims of anti-religious hate crimes in America, will be defended and protected.

The Plight of Egyptian Christians and Islamic Persecution: ‘Forced to Flee in Rivers of Blood’

Egyptian Christians (or Coptic for Egyptian, ie. Coptic Christians or Copts) are facing “unprecedented levels of persecution and suppression,” according to The Open Doors 2018 World Watch List Report. In 2017 more than 200 Copts were driven out of their homes and 128 were killed because of their faith.

CBS News describes the plight of Copts as having “suffered one of their worst periods in nearly 2,000 years.” Its 60 Minutes program reported that Christians,

were the target of revenge by Muslim mobs this summer after Egypt’s first Islamist president was overthrown in a military coup.Over 40 Christian churches all over Egypt were gutted by arson and looted — some over a thousand years old and full of priceless relics. Copts have also been murdered in ongoing sectarian violence.

After the military overthrew the Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi, Copts and their churches were targeted and blamed for the military coup. Heba Morayef, head of Human Rights Watch Egypt explained, “Accusations that Christians were responsible for the coup. Chants that would call Christians ‘the pope’s dogs,’ could be heard at demonstrations.” (The Coptic leader, Pope Tawadros II, had appeared in public with the new military leaders.)

Here’s a description of one mob attack of an Egyptian church in Kerdasa, near Cairo:

A mob broke down the gate and entered the church.  “They looted everything, from chairs to pews,” says Redha Girgis.  “They stole anything that could be carried, what they couldn’t carry, they destroyed,” he says.  “They set the whole place on fire with Molotov cocktails and gasoline.”

Copts are Egypt’s Christian minority and represent the largest Christian community in the region. Roughly 9 million in total, they represent 10 percent of Egypt’s population and roughly half of the Christians living in the Middle East. Since 2014 their persecution has increased, the World Watch List Report notes, listing Egypt as the 17th most dangerous place for Christians to live.

Open Doors UK and Ireland CEO Lisa Pearce said of the Copts’ plight:

Christians in Egypt face a barrage of discrimination and intimidation yet they refuse to give up their faith. It is hard for us…to imagine being defined by our religion every single day in every sphere of life. In Egypt, as in many other Middle Eastern countries, your religion is stated on your identity card. This makes discrimination and persecution easy—you are overlooked for jobs, planning permits are hard to obtain and you are a target when you go to church.

The Times described their situation in an excruciating headline: “Coptic Christians forced to flee from ISIS’ rivers of blood,” and described in detail the brutal murder of one MBB man, marked as an apostate by his Islamist killers.

But Adel Guindy, the former president of Coptic Solidarity, a U.S.-based human rights organization that promotes equality for Coptic Christians in Egypt, told the Jewish News Service that such attacks are not being solely perpetrated by ISIS. The reality, he notes, is that Christian persecution has intensified under President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi. Islamic persecution, he says, “has reached an all-time high” despite any public remarks the president may make about tolerance or supporting Christians, or blaming ISIS for attacks. Guindy clarified:

El-Sisi is quick to blame it on ‘external forces,’ [but] it is in fact homegrown. It’s a direct result of a permeating hate culture that dominates the entire public space. Furthermore, the ‘big violence’ events that attract international media’s attention are in fact a mere tip of an iceberg of systemic and systematic discrimination and persecution that amount to a state-sanctioned ‘war of attrition.’

The World Watch List report describes a range of persecution that Coptic Christians endure at the hands of their Islamic neighbors and government. Specifically, Muslim Background Believers (MBB) are primary targets for death or torture unless they return to Islam. Islamic persecution ranges from violence on one extreme to restricting where Copts can worship.

On Palm Sunday last year, suicide bombers killed 49 Copts worshipping in their churches in Alexandria and Tanta. Eight months later during Advent, Islamists killed at least eight Coptic Christians worshipping in their church south of Cairo.

In May, Islamists attacked Christians traveling to a monastery in Upper Egypt, killing 29.

In the Minya governorate alone, more than 15 Christian girls were kidnapped to be sold and forced into an arranged marriage with Muslim men and convert to Islam.

Despite this persecution, love and forgiveness is repeatedly expressed by Coptic Christians. A senior leader in the church, Bishop Thomas, told CBS News that

revenge is not his religion’s way. Forgiveness is a very important principle in the Christian life. When you are able to present forgiveness, and love, you are able as well to ask for justice.

Coptic Christians are an historic community dating to their discipleship by the Apostle John Mark and author of the Gospel of Mark. Mark is believed to be the first bishop of the Coptic church c. AD 42 to 62. Prior to the East-West Schism of AD 1054, the Coptic Church was distinct from the Roman Catholic Church and Empire, having affirmed the doctrines established by the Council of Chalcedon c. AD 451. (The council clarified the hypostatic nature of Jesus Christ as “one hypostasis in two natures” (one person with two distinct natures)). Under Roman rule Copts were of different cultural backgrounds (Greeks, Jews, and Egyptians) but were united under Mark and through the gospel. Estimates of the Coptic population worldwide today ranges from 10 to 60 million.

The World Watch Report is produced annually, is independently audited, and ranks the top 50 countries where Christians are most persecuted. Persecution is determined by several factors, including violence and restrictions on private, family, community, national and church life.

Despite Regular Targeting and Imprisonment, Christianity in Iran is Spreading

Christians in Iran are regularly targeted and imprisoned for worshipping and praying in their own homes behind closed doors and windows. Despite ongoing targeted persecution, the mission group Elam Ministries recently revealed that more people in Iran are becoming Christians. Compared to roughly 500 known Christians in 1979 there are approximately 360,000.

In 2014 Christians and Muslims protested against Iran’s persecution of Christians.

Despite their efforts, millions of dollars has been spent on Islamic propaganda cracking down on finding newly converted Christians, and imprisoning them. Enforcement also resulted in permanently closing previously allowed public Farsi church services nationwide. Likewise, all Christian materials and books are prohibited and confiscated. Publishing and producing anything related to Christianity results in imprisonment, and more likely, death.

Amidst ongoing persecution, however, is a significant truth. More Iranians are becoming Christians. Elam Ministries recently told BosNewsLife that,

Church leaders believe that millions can be added to the church in the next few years — such is the spiritual hunger that exists and the disillusionment with the Islamic regime.

If we remain faithful to our calling, our conviction is that it is possible to see the nation transformed within our lifetime. Because Iran is a strategic gateway nation, the growing church in Iran will impact Muslim nations across the Islamic world.

One key member of the Elam team who is training Iranian believers for ministry, is Behrang Masoumi. He came to Christ after being invited to a Christmas party at a house church. When he arrived, he learned that one of his relatives had been going to that church for five years and was a Christian. He said, “I was shocked. I was even more shocked to discover that she had been secretly following Jesus for five years. And she had been praying for me all that time.”

Attending a Christmas Eve service is a costly choice. Last Christmas Eve, Iranian security forces raided a house and arrested five Christian men. Mohabat News, an Iranian Christian news agency, and the NCRI, a Foreign Affairs Committee of Human Rights, reported that Mr. Hosseini, Ahmad Bazyar, Faegheh Nasrollahi, Mastaneh Rastegari, and Amir-Hossein Ne’matollahi were arrested. No one knows where these men are or if they are alive.

Plainclothes agents were involved in raiding the house, arresting the men, and confiscating their books, CDs, laptops, and satellite receiver. They also raided the Christians’ neighbor’s house, using threats, intimidation and violence.

Worshipping Jesus, if caught, results in imprisonment and likely, death. Yet enough people are becoming Christians to worry Islamic leaders. According Mohabat News, Islamic clerics are expressing serious concern about many young people converting to Christianity. One Islamic seminary leader, Ayatollah Alavi Boroujerdi, remarked that “accurate reports indicate that the youth are becoming Christians in Qom and attending house churches.” Ayatollah Makarem Shirazi also expressed his concern about the popularity of Christianity in Mashhad-area suburbs.

After ayatollahs publicly express their concerns, political enforcement officials are sent to Islamic centers to aid teachers and preachers to reach suburban youth. Increased persecution and rounds of arrests usually follows. And they are not solely focused on youth. One recent arrest was of an Iranian pastor’s wife who was charged with “acting against national security.” She denied all of the charges and was sentenced to five years in prison, according to Article 18, a UK-based organization that focuses on Christians in Iran and the Center for Human Rights in Iran (CHRI).

Iranians becoming Christians is not a phenomenon limited solely to Iran. In 2016 The Independent noted that Iranian asylum seekers were attending churches in Germany and viewed Christianity as “a new chance at freedom.” One priest from the Evangelical-Freikirchlichen Gemeinde in Berlin, explained,

A lot of them come to Germany and think, here I can choose my religion and I want to choose a religion of freedom. For many Iranians that I’ve baptized, Christianity is the religion of freedom.

More recent news reports noted that 80 Muslims from Afghanistan and Iran converted to Christianity in Hamburg, Germany. Those who are baptized tell how their lives have changed because of Christ. One pastor explained,

Because the Christian faith changed the way of thinking, the world view. If someone told me that at night he can sleep again or an old enemy could forgive, then I know that in his heart he is a Christian.

The good news for Iranians is that despite the government’s concerted efforts to the contrary,  Christianity continues to grow. And, even under the most oppressive conditions Christianity is still viewed by many as “the religion of freedom,” and love. Why? Because of what Christian converts repeatedly claim: “In Islam, we always lived in fear. Fear God, fear of sin, fear of punishment. However, Christ is a God of love.”

U.S. Presidents Opened Gates of Hell, Unleashed Demons on Syrian Christians

Aramean advocate and author Johny Messo, who presides over the World Council of Arameans, recently wrote that the destruction of Christian Syrians has been a disastrous consequence of failed U.S. policies. Two presidents in particular, he writes, “opened the gates of hell and unleashed demons on Syria.”

He points not only to the exodus of Christians but also to their near annihilation:

While President George W. Bush may have opened the gates of hell for Iraq’s Christians, President Obama not only widened them, but unleashed the demons on Syria. The following give some idea of this downward spiral:

Before the U.S. invasion of Iraq in 2003, after earlier underreported exoduses of Christians from the country, there were 1.4 million Christians in Iraq, making up 5.4% of its overall population of 26 million. Today, 15 years later, Iraq’s Christian population stands at less than 250,000, a drop of 82%, and a mere 0.65% of Iraq’s general and much larger population of 38 million.

In 2011, there were 1.8 – 2 million Christians in Syria, who made up 8% of the country’s total population of 23 million. Today, less than seven years later, no more than 500,000 Christians, out of a total population of 18.2 million can be found in their war-torn homeland — a drop of more than 72%.

Ancient Christians communities have existed throughout Egypt, Greece, Iran, Iraq, Lebanon, Syria, and Turkey. Aramaic-speaking churches include the Syriac Orthodox, Syriac Catholics, Chaldeans, Nestorians (also known as Assyrians), Maronites, Melkite Orthodox and Melkite Catholics.

Last October Vice President Pence committed to help Christians being persecuted and forced into destitution at a conference in Washington, D.C.: “In Defense of Christians.” Pence pledged, “from this day forward, America will provide support directly to persecuted [Christian] communities through USAID.”

Messo points out a poignant reality that I address in my forthcoming book series about Christianity and Islam: Christians are the largest religious group in the world and yet they are the most persecuted group in the world, and lack a political voice. He clarifies this irony:

America was founded on Judeo-Christian values. Almost all U.S. presidents, including Trump, and members of Congress, have identified themselves as Christian. Yet Christians, members of the largest religion in the world, have become the most persecuted faith group but lack a political voice. In addition, as a result of failed U.S. foreign policy, Christians have vanished in record numbers from the lands where the traditional and still main religion of America (and Europe) was born. In view of its Christian roots and identity, America has a moral obligation to the cradle of Christianity from becoming “Christenrein” (“free of Christians”).

Christians in America have a great responsibility and opportunity to help their brothers and sisters in Christ who are suffering because of failed American foreign policies and Islamic persecution.

Muslims in Middle East Becoming Christians, Churches Expect Millions of Converts

The Voice Of the Martyrs (Canada division, VOMC) told BosNewsLife that thousands of Muslims are becoming Christians in the Middle East– through the reach of radio broadcasts.

VOMC reports that “the church” is growing despite intense persecution in Syria, Iraq, Jordan and other areas of the Middle East. Thousands of Muslims are returning to the faith of their homeland’s ancestors in Jesus Christ, maintaining that they understand Christianity is the “religion of freedom.” Amidst ongoing persecution throughout the region, a spiritual hunger exists, and new Christians are pleading for Bibles in their own language.

VOMC stated:

There are thousands upon thousands coming to Christ. We are in regular contact with our FM stations in Iraq and have talked with many people who have family in the Middle East.

Some of our Middle Eastern broadcasters have shared testimonies [about many turning to Christ] with us, which they hear directly from listeners when visiting there…

VOMC emphasized that despite Islamic terrorism and ongoing war, “God has been very faithful,” and there are “strong Christian believers remaining” in the Middle East.”

The focus is on the Lord, to whom VOMC credits “the tremendous growth [that] is taking place in the lives of new believers who were Muslims.” It reiterates that God is to “be praised and worshipped with great honour, He is worthy.”

Ex-Muslims Challenge Pope Francis on Islam

Ex-Muslims, who are now Christians, recently challenged Pope Francis in an open letter about his remarks on Islam. They also asked the pope if they should return to Islam and deny their Christian faith based on his remarks. In their letter, “From former Muslims who became Catholics, ‬and their friends,‬‬‬‬ to His Holiness Pope Francis,‬‬ about his attitude towards Islam,” they mention that the pope has ignored their repeated attempts to speak to him and invited others to sign the letter.

First, they addressed the pope’s remarks in his 2013 book, Evangelii Gaudium, (The Joy of the Gospel). In his 168-page exhortation on “the church’s primary mission of evangelization in the modern world,” they questioned paragraphs ‬‬252 and 253,‭ wondering why he ignored the historical reality‭ ‬that “Islam came AFTER Christ.”

They boldly asked the pope:

‬If ‬Islam is a good religion in itself, ‬as you seem to teach, ‬why did we become Catholic?

‬Do not your words question the soundness of the choice we made ‬at the risk of our lives?

‬Islam prescribes death for apostates (‬Quran ‬4.89, ‬8.7-11)‬, ‬do you know? ‬

How is it possible to ‬compare Islamic violence with so-called Christian violence‭?‬  “What is the relationship between Christ and Satan? ‬What union is there between light and darkness? ‬What association between the faithful and the unfaithful?”‬ (2 ‬Cor ‬6: ‬14-17) ‬

In ‬accordance with His teaching (‬Lk ‬14:26)‬, ‬we preferred Him, ‬the Christ, ‬to our own life. ‬Are we not in a good position to talk to you about Islam?‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬

It’s important to note that ex-Muslims who become Christians are primarily targeted by Islamists who carry out the Qur’an’s instructions to kill everyone who leaves Islam. Leaving and or denying Islam is a form of apostasy and blasphemy, both of which are crimes punishable by death in nearly all Islamic countries.

This is especially poignant in light of the fact that Christians are increasingly being persecuted for their faith primarily by Islamists, as the last two World Watch reports released by Open Doors reveals. The report identifies the most targeted for persecution and death: “MBB” Christians (Muslim Background Believers).

Knowing this, they also confronted the pope about his remarks on the Qur’an. As Christians they believe the true Word of God is the Bible, not the Qur’an. As such they asked:

‬How can you speak of peace and endorse Islam, ‬as you seem to do:  “‬To wring from our hearts the disease that‭ ‬plagues our lives‭ (‬…‭) ‬Let those who are Christians do it with the Bible and those who are Muslims do it with the Quran.‭ “(‬Rome,‭ ‬January‭ ‬20,‭ ‬2014‭)‬? That the Pope seems to propose the Quran as a way of salvation,‭ is that not cause for worry? ‬Should we return to Islam‭?

Well versed and documented they also addressed the pope’s flawed position on “refugees” and the migration crisis in Europe. They also implored him not to align himself with Islam:

We beg you not to seek in Islam an ally in your fight against the powers that want to dominate and enslave the world, ‬since they share the same totalitarian logic based on the rejection of the kingship of Christ (‬Lk ‬4.7).

They go on to focus on the purpose of their letter and of Christianity: the Gospel of Jesus Christ. They, as Christians, seek to lead others to Jesus and to rescue other Muslims from the false and evil ideology of Islam. They write: “The pro-Islam speech of Your Holiness leads us to deplore the fact that Muslims are not invited to leave Islam.”

They go on to mention Christians suffering at the hands of Islam, and name the countries and Christians, specifically, who fail to confront Islamic evil. They asked the pope to publicly address the dangers of Islam:

Allow us to ask Your Holiness to quickly convene a synod on the dangers of Islam. What remains of the Church where Islam has installed itself? If she still has civil rights, it is in dhimmitude, on the condition that she does not evangelize, thus denying her very essence. ‬In the interest of justice and truth, ‬the Church must bring to light why the arguments put forward by Islam to blaspheme the Christian ‬faith are false. ‬If the Church had the courage to do that, ‬we do not doubt that millions, ‬Muslims as well as other men and women seeking the true God, ‬would convert. ‬As you said: “He who does not pray to Christ, prays to the Devil.”(14.03.13) If people knew they were going to Hell, ‬they would give their lives to Christ. (‬cf. Quran ‬3.55)‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬

They closed the letter by asking for the pope’s blessing. The letter is available in 13 languages and as a PDF. They ask other Christians to sign their open letter, hoping that with enough signatures the pope will respond. To date he has not. So far, the letter has received 3,900 signatures.

GROSS: Amazon and Microsoft Employees Involved in Sex-Trafficking

On the heels of Silicon Valley opposing congressional legislation to clamp down on sex-trafficking, and the controversy of Google’s cultural of sexism, it turns out that two giant technology companies are involved in sex-trafficking after-all: Microsoft and Amazon. According to a recent report published by Newsweek, high ranking officials from Microsoft and Amazon were buying sex from hundreds of trafficked sex workers in Seattle every day for the last several years.

Microsoft employee email accounts sent 67 emails; Amazon’s, 63. The report reveals that law enforcement authorities collected these emails in 2015 during a sting operation involving several high-level Microsoft and Amazon directors. Their emails document that they bought services from trafficked sex workers– and that the tech industry is involved with control over brothels. According to authorities, hundreds of men in Seattle were buying sex from trafficked Asian women every day.

The report reveals that other employee emails from tech companies like T-Mobile, Oracle, Boeing, were also involved. Newsweek has not published the identity of any of the people involved. Surprisingly, according to Newsweek and Engadget no one has been arrested.

The information became public after a public records request to the King County Prosecutor’s Office was made, which revealed that the men were caught because they were using company email. Apparently, Seattle sex-traffickers require an employee email or badge to make sure no police are involved.

Despite the tech companies statements of their company policy against sexism, sex-trafficking, etc., it is undeniable that sex-trafficking is a huge part of the technology industry, especially in silicon valley.

According to Alex Trouteaud, a director at the national anti-trafficking organization, Demand Abolition, the tech industry has created a “culture that has readily embraced trafficking.” According to another anti-human trafficking organization, Polaris, there are more than 700 Asian brothels based in silicon valley.
