In 1985 G. Eward Griffin interviewed on camera a former KGB agent Yuri Bezmenov who explained the four basic steps those in power use to socially engineer attitudes and behaviors of entire populations.
What Bemenov refers to as “psychological warfare,” otherwise called “ideological subversion” or “active measures,” are frequently used on entire populations by government operatives.
The goal is “to change a population’s perception of reality– to such an extent– that despite the abundance of information, no one is able to come to sensible conclusions.”

Brainwashing a nation, Bemenov argues, is accomplished slowly, over time, in four phases.
Phase One: Demoralize a Nation
This phase takes 15-30 years to educate one generation of students without being challenged. The focus is to influence ideas and social patterns. Bemenov suggests this phase was already completed in America by 1985.
Phase Two: Destabilization
This takes 2-5 years to destroy the economy, foreign relations, defense systems, and influence of Marxist ideology. Bemenov marveled:
“The influence of Marxist-Leninist ideas in the United States is absolutely fantastic. I could never believe that 14 years ago when I landed in this part of the world that the process would go that fast.”
Phase Three: Crisis
The government promises people free benefits while it simultaneously establishes “benevolent dictators” who attempt to transform the country to its detriment. He cites the successful examples of crisis in Nicaragua, Afghanistan, Grenada, and Bangladesh.
Phase Four: After Crisis/Normalization
This phase involves a violent change of a country’s power structure and economy. He referred to the consolidated propaganda used when “Brotherly Czechoslovakia is normalized.”
Bemenov warned in 1985:
“This will happen in the United States if you allow all of these schmucks to bring the country to crisis, to promise people all kinds of goodies and paradise on earth [in order to simultaneously] destabilize the economy, eliminate the principle of a free market competition, and put a big brother government in Washington, D.C. full of benevolent dictators.”
It appears his insight was fortuitous, as Americans continue to struggle against the third phase from being fully implemented.
