CRAZY: California College Students MARRY the Ocean [VIDEO]

Campus Reform recently reported that a Santa Monica College professor led students on an “EcoSexual Sextravaganza” in which participants not only married the ocean, but consummated the relationship.

According to Campus Reform:

Amber Katherine, a philosophy professor who helped organize the May 14 event, explained to Campus Reform that the purpose of the ‘wedding’ was to bring about a deeper love for the planet through ‘ecocentric passion and even lust.’

The ceremony began with Bruce Cartier, a former SMC student, proclaiming to those gathered at Santa Monica Beach that ‘today we stand upon this holy earth and in this sacred space to witness the rite of matrimony between the sea and us all.’

Next, leaders of the event distributed rings to the students, announcing ‘with this ring, I bestow upon the sea the treasures of my mind heart and hands—as well as my body and soul. With the power vested in us, we now pronounce you ‘married to the sea’.”

After the ceremony, Campus Reform added, some students made their way to the water where they were encouraged to consummate their new relationship with the ocean and literally “make love with the water.”

Students were told: “Stick your toes in the water … or any part of your body that you want.”

According to Amber Katherine, a philosophy professor who helped organize the May 14 event, it “was funded by a number of campus organizations.”  The main sponsor, the professor said, was the university’s Public Policy Institute chapter.

One attendee, A fishnet-clad UCSC alumni identified only as “Serenity,” said:

Back when I would hug trees in Santa Cruz, I would sort of ask the tree if it was okay if I hugged it and I would feel their spirit or energy or something give a response back, and then proceed accordingly,” she told The Corsair. “Consent is definitely important. Do you think the Earth would consent to fracking and pollution? Probably not.”

The Corsair added:

Following the opening act was a series of environmentally-themed speakers and performers, including an interpretive dance by students from U.C. Santa Cruz with a sea made from a sheet of plastic with plastic bags attached to it, a woman who sang a song about the earth and booty shaking, and a girl who stripped down to a thong over leggings, boots and nipple tassels, waving a white flag.

“It’s kind of overwhelming and confusing, and kind of great,” said Chandler Tipton, who attended the event.

This is a fairly accurate sentiment for most of us, particularly the confusing part. While the idea makes sense, one question lingers: How serious is this? Do people really believe in having a romantic relationship with the Earth?
